Online Survey Reveals Romanians Actively Seek Jobs In The United Kingdom
The Eastern European labour market has been characterised in the last two decades by a strong emmigration phenomenon. The Romanian labour market makes no exception: just within the member states of the EU almost three million Romanian citizens have found work, according to the latest official statistics. The United Kingdom is the most popular country for Romanians looking for work abroad. Indeed, Tjobs.ro monthly statistics show a growing interest in British job positions. An online survey conducted by Tjobs.ro corroborates its applicants’ desire to work in the United Kingdom.
(08/11/2010) Tîrgu-Mureş, MUREŞ County, ROMANIA – A total of 22,847 job positions abroad are available on www.tjobs.ro as of 28/10/2010, in 28 industry sectors and 41 countries. Moreover, a total of 65,454 applications were recorded on the Tjobs.ro recruitment system, during the reporting period 24/09 – 28/10/2010, United Kingdom representing 25% of the online applications. Romanians searching for job offers abroad through www.tjobs.ro could participate in the online survey “Do You Want to Work in the United Kingdom?” The results of this survey are presented below.
General Information Concerning the Romanian Labour Market
In the „Top 10 Ranking of “Industry Sectors With Job Offers Abroad””, the sector „Medical and Health Personnel” is ranked No. 1, with 24.93% of available openings (5,695 job positions), followed by „Hotels/Travel” (13.35%) and „Agriculture/Sylviculture” (6.78%). (Graphic 1)
The „Top 10 ranking of “Foreign Countries With Job Offers”” reveals that United Kingdom (UK) is the new leader in open positions, with a share of 25.50% of the total 22,847 positions available abroad. With its 5,826 available positions, the UK precedes runner up, Greece (11.15%, 2,547 job positions). (Graphic 2)
The interest Tjobs.ro applicants express for the jobs in the UK is reiterated in a “Top 10 “Foreign Countries Whose Job Offers Romanians Applied For””. In the reporting period 29/09 – 28/10.2010, almost 21% of Romanians using Tjobs.ro’s recruitment system mainly applied for job positions in UK. The discrepancy is visible when comparing with the number of applications for Germany: 10,170 UK job applications against 6,501 application of Germany. Italy, the former favourite of Romanian workers is now ranked No. 3 by Tjobs.ro users, with a 7.39% share. (Graphic 3)
10.26% of Romanians using the Tjobs.ro job search function used the search term “UK” when looking for a job abroad, during the reporting period 29/09 – 28/10/2010 (Graphic 4). This is almost double the percentage of the next two most searched for countries, Germany (5.87%) and Italy (4.45%). Nevertheless, Graphic 5 shows a seasonal pattern regarding Romanians’ interest in British job adverts.
Romanians’ Interest in the British Labour Market
A quarterly study published on www.tjobs.ro regarding the evolution in the number of online applications for job openings in various UK industry sectors shows that the five most researched and applied for industry sectors are the following, in the period 01/01/2010 – 28/10/2010: 1. “Hotels/Travel” (16,684 applications); 2. “Restaurants” (8,876 applications); 3. “Medical and Health Personnel” (8,321 applications); 4. “Au Pair/Childcare” (7,082 applications); 5. “Agriculture/Sylviculture” (4,410 applications). (Graphics 6, 7, 8 & 9, Appendix 1)
“Medical and Health Personnel” is the only industry sector showing steady growth during 2010, with “Au Pair/Childcare” and “Medical and Health Personnel” job openings increasing for Romanian applicants since the second quarter of 2010. In contrast, the number of job offers for the industry sectors “Restaurant” and “Agriculture/Sylviculture” has continuosly decreased this year. In some ways this statistic is unsurprising, however, as the interest in the latter two sectors is lower during the automn/winter season. (Graphic 10, Appendix 1)
“Do You Want to Work in the United Kingdom?”
Romanians searching for job offers abroad through www.tjobs.ro could participate in the online survey “Do You Want to Work in the United Kingdom?” during the period 21/10 – 01/11/2010. The main goal of the survey was to understand the interest Romanians have for the British labour market. The same online poll was also looking into which UK industry sectors and job titles are of most interest to Tjobs.ro users.
The survey was divided into two different sets of questions: (1) “Do you want to work in UK?” and (2) “Have you worked in UK before?”
5,639 participants responded to the survey by e-mail invitation. What is interesting is that despite 71.00% of the applicants being male (Graphic 12, Appendix 2), different results show that 54.00% of the people interested in jobs abroad are females. This means that men are more likely to use the Internet in their job search, while women are more likely to use personal contacts, telephone, or recruiting agents. Moreover, applicants aged 35-44 (39.00%) and those aged 55 and over (35.00%) are more numerous to take part in the online poll. (Graphic 11, Appendix 2)
Only 1.00% of the participants denies wanting to go to work in UK. (Graphic 13, Appendix 2) The other 99.00% express their desire to work in UK in a skilled labour position (68.00%), while 29.00% of them search a job demanding higher education. 32.00% of the survey participants willing to work in the UK would accept an unskilled labour proposition. (Graphic 14, Appendix 2)
“Industry” (14.87%), “Construction” (13.80%) and “Hotels/Travel” (13.45%) are the first three choices of Romanians on the British labour market. (Graphic 15, Appendix 2) And “England” is by far the region most preferred by survey’s participants. (Graphic 16, Appendix 2)
The second part of the survey reveals that 7.00% of the participating applicants have already worked in the UK before. (Graphic 17, Appendix 2) “Construction” (23.54%), “Agriculture/Sylviculture” (17.47%) and “Industry” (15.74%) are the main industry sectors these participants have worked in. 64.00% occupied positions requiring skilled labour and higher education competences, and 35.35% of them lived in “London” during their contracts period. (Graphics 18, 19 & 20, Appendix 2)
Participants’ real desire in obtaining a job in the UK was re-tested in one final question: “which country would you go to work in as soon as tomorrow?” 70.00% of participants chose the United Kingdom. (Graphics 21, Appendix 2)
